This pattern can be copied, shrank, enlarged, or left the same.  I whittle and carve small, so this piece is about 4 1/2 inches tall.
Trace the pattern on Basswood that is 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick for a standing Uncle Sam whittled in the round.  Trace the pattern onto 1/4th inch Basswood if Uncle Sam is to be a pin.

Cut the blank on a scroll saw, band saw or with a cope saw.
Draw the hat brim, ears, arms, coat, vest, and pant cuffs onto the blank.  Draw a center line on the blank edges.  If whittlin in the round do this on all sides.

Make stop cuts

Deeper stop cuts at:  Front of arms, hat brim (top and bottom), Top of chest / bottom of jaw line, Ear out line, pant cuffs, and pants pockets.

With a very sharp knife, remove "chips " in front and behind ears, and each side of nose.

Remove "chips" at the inside elbows and pare down from the head/hair to the top of the shoulders. to begin to separate the shoulders from the hear/hair.

Remove "chip" from top of chest area to the bottom of beard/jaw line.  Part 2 next posting.
