The true ending of the story is that young Watson was rescued and grew up to the mayor of London at the time Copley lived there.
Copley tells stories; those are real and have been witnessed by real people. A picture that tells a story is called a narrative. Before the cameras were invented, pictures were drawn for an even from reports by people who were witnesses.
