Choosing the right project is the biggest decision. Ornate furniture or gazebos might not be the best first project for newbies. Maybe consider building a birdhouse or a picture frame would be better. The experienced know that taking on the wrong project should be avoided. Dont be afraid to challenge yourself either. The sense of accomplishment upon completing your woodworking task makes all the effort worthwhile.

Consider the time available to spend on the project. Any project takes time, whether it is a few hours or the whole weekend. Some projects can extend multiple weeks or longer. Make sure you can dedicate sufficient time to complete what you started.

Make sure you have a blueprint or step-by-step instructions. If you choose to do the design yourself, draw out the completed project on gridded or lined paper with a uniform measuring scale. Otherwise, many plans can be found online or at a home improvement store. The design and all instructions should be understandable and thoroughly reviewed by you prior to starting.

Use the right tools for your project. A hammer, nails, measuring tape or ruler, hand saw, level, and pencil are the bare minimum you have for any project. Screwdrivers, various screws and fasteners, and wood glues all come in handy. A circular saw, band saw, shaver, planer, saw horses, or a variety of power or hand tools may be needed. Dont worry about having to purchase a slew of expensive tools. You can rent almost any tool at your local hardware or home improvement store.


Use the right wood for the type of project. Pine, maple, and oak are all good woods for indoor projects. The wood used for outdoor projects requires more thought. Cedar and teak are a couple of examples of harder more weather resistant woods. Consider your climate and how durable the wood needs to be.
